A stunning Welcome Swallow necklace cleverly cast in sterling silver from an original Tania Mallow carving, finished with a sterling silver chain and clasp.
The Welcome Swallow is a lovely feature of the New Zealand skies and has long been one of Tania Mallow’s most loved birds. Its sweet and extremely graceful flight patterns are spellbinding. They are often found nesting under an eave of a house or barn, making their homes in close proximity to ours. Originally from Australia they flew on their own steam to our shores here in Aotearoa mid last century.
There are many renditions of the Swallow in art and jewellery but Tania’s Swallow stands out from the rest. Instead of texturing its surface she has brought it up to a very high polish which imitates the quick movements of the swallow as it reflects light in dancing flickers. Again she has chosen to carve her bird in profile though this time opting to bring the bird to life with a play on perspective. We love the way the Swallow seems to move as the perspective shifts from above the bird to below the bird.
The bird range has a beautiful weighty feel. Like many of Tania Mallow's other pieces they are created with comfort and quality at the forefront. Materials are not spared on her jewellery and wearing them feels amazing. This necklace is enhanced by a skillful oxidization technique which brings the carved lines to life.
Sterling silver is an alloy of silver containing 92.5% pure silver. The alloy composition results in a metal that is very durable and long lasting. Sterling silver is easily polished using a polishing cloth. Tania Mallow jewellery is certified sterling silver.
